This is the second and,as many have said, best in John Ford's illustrious cavalry trilogy. I go further in claiming for it high state in the genre of western films, it is one of the finest. Wayne wears makeup that ages him 20 years and his acting performance transforms him into that older man Captain Nathan Brittles, soon to be retired from the U. S. Cavalry. Captain Brittles talking to his slack wife at her grave,while he waters the plants he has placed there, with Monument valley in the background is one of the more bright scenes. This and "The Searchers" are Wayne's finest acting performances. "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" won an academy award for it's color cinematography and it was well deserved. This is one aesthetic film. Ford shot many of his westerns in Monument valley, this is his definitive Monument valley western, you really leer alot of the landscape and clouds and it's glowing. The special features on this dvd has a short home movie of Ford and Wayne flying down to Mexico and hanging out relieve in the forties. Bear this one because it's one of those rare films you can, and will want to, gape over and over.

Capt. Nathan Brittles (John Wayne) is arrive retirement and looks at it with an unsure and heavy heart. After years in the U.S. Cavalry it is all he knows and is not distinct what will become of him when he leaves it. Brittles knows that the Army and life will go on, but what will his role in life be, since he lost his wife years before. This is the second and best film in the John Ford cavalry trilogy. As it Brittles is not very fervent on handing over express to younger soldiers who are yet to explain themself in leading other men and in combat. For all it's worth he has microscopic to no say about what will happen to those who assume over and what will become of the indian tribe that he has worked with and delt with for so long. Victor McLaglen is a broad supporter in the film as he also faces retirement and enjoys his whiskey and fights along with the other men. A narrative about trust and service along with changing times, it features one of Wayne's best performances. An Oscar winner for best color cinematography (Winton C. Hoch) that features Monument Valley, this is a film to ogle as it is a western and war film wraped into one. It is simple yet not dreary and it get's to the point when needed. Grade: B+

French director Arnaud Desplechin's film works as one of the best mult-layered movies of the genre, which in many respects takes its conventions and turns them on their head. Not your feel fine, holiday coming home movie but one which inverts and mischievously perverts viewer expectations and instead dares to substitute steady people for the usual suspects. The first rate acting (the legendary Catherine Deneuve and the not as well known but no less talented Desplechin actors Mathieu Almaric and Emmanuelle Devos) takes a venerable genre residence - mother (Denueve) suffers from cancer and needs a bone marrow transplant - and explores the generational conflicts that wound this family and provocatively and evocatively deals with the issues of mother love; forgiveness; sibling rivalry; anxiety for thwarted dreams and life changing losses, and even fidelity itself. For film lovers who devour characters in unconventional situations, this film will continue to reward upon future viewings. Those requiring faded Hollywood plotting and endings should probably gaze elsewhere. I would add that the director is one of the best working today. One of the best films of 2008.

Think the opposite of everything the movie Dan in Dependable Life stands for with one exception, which is already saying the movie is unbelievable. A family gathers during Christmas time, the matriarch awaits her families bone marrow tests to glimpse if they are a match so she can live, and the unpleasant boy brother who has been excommunicated returns. As cliché as that sounds the only thing cliché is the title and to refer relieve to Dan in Valid Life the only thing sincere is the true in that title. In keeping it true the film's complex characters have role ambiguity and viewers are left with an initiate ending. The only thing in Epic wrapped with a bow are the presents.

Oh, however, Dan in accurate life had the fair Juliette Binoche (also in this years astonishing Flight of the Red Balloon) and Anecdote also has many splendid and talented French actresses that could obtain any act seem classy. The cinematography is also sparkling as is the get.

Funny and romantic, sweet and charming, an unlikely but brillantly witty leading lady and the beauty of Ireland combine to form this minute film a definate keeper! This one very powerful reminds me of those fantastic romantic screwball comedies of the 30's and 40's.

Marci Tizard(Janeane Garofalo) is sent on on assignment by her boss, a Senator from Boston Mass, who is in dire need of some serve getting re-elected. The assignment...to net the Senator McGlory's relatives in a dinky Brigadoonesque village in Ireland. Marci lands smack dab in the middle of a matchmaking festival and must ward off suitors in her quest to net the senator's roots. The towns people are charming but quirky, and there is one in particular that gets under Marci's skin. A cynical ex-journalist(David O'Hara) matches wits with her and it's a match made in heaven(or Ireland) .

Also starring is the fantastic Milo O'Shea as "The Matchmaker", who cleverly tries to bring these two together. The laughs are non terminate and will leave you smiling for some time afterwards. It was directed by Sign Joffe and has a terrific atmospheric soundtrack as well.

There are a couple editions of this DVD and the one I am reviewing has a relate of Janeane Garofalo with the radiant hills of Ireland in the background and it is in the middle of a white building. Milo O'shea is standing on the ground, the title is is red with a clover in the name. I report it in detail because the tech info here differs on some aspects. The studio of production is Universal (not USA) . The film which was shot on status in stunning Ireland has been given a delicate transfer and may be viewed in widescreen(2.35:1) or the standard format. Expedient surround sound in DD5.1 lets you hear every detail. There's not alot in the blueprint of extras, but there are some cast bios and filmographies and Closed Captioning in English as well as subtitles in French and Spanish and some theatrical trailers.

The film is rated R for some langauge.

I esteem this movie! The scenery is breathtaking, the acting is first rate, and the sage is charming. This movie transports you to Ireland. The fictional village of Bali Na Gragh (sp? ) is overcast yet welcoming, and the people all ogle right (not like extras on a Hollywood site) . It is refreshing to net a romantic comedy that does not grasp plot in an urban landscape. You won't procure any Mystic Tanned lads or lasses here! Janeane Garafolo is gorgeously pale, and looks like a proper woman. Her acting here is first rate, as usual. After watching the movie 8 times, it is hard to imagine anyone else playing the role of Marcy. Her "match", Sean, played by David O'Hara is one of my approved male movie characters ever. He is a charming, smart cad with a heart of gold. O'Hara is definately not a Brad Pitt or Ben Affleck (thank God!), but man is he sexy! It's about time a romantic comedy has a male lead that isn't prettier than his female costar. The matchmaker, played by Milo O'Shea is the glue that holds this terrific anecdote together. O'Shea's narration throughout the film is hilarious. All the supporting cast is valid, although I don't understand why Denis Leary gets top billing in this film (after Garafolo) . His fraction was very minute, only somewhat pivotal, and could have been played by anyone. The movie follows Marcy to Ireland as she searches for Senator John McGlory's Irish roots. She happens to come during the matchmaking festival and meets Sean, who thoroughly irritates her. You can guess what happens next. I usually despise romantic comedies. Any Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks combo makes me accelerate for the hills! If you are like me, study The Matchmaker. If the quirky, realistic sage doesn't endear you, the soundtrack will! In fact, my ONLY complaint about The Matchmaker is that the soundtrack is not available. Do not miss this movie! It is probably sitting on the bargain shelf at your local video store, beacause not enough people know about it, or they are lacking taste. Step away from Sleepless in Seattle!! Give The Matchmaker a chance.

It's absolutely amazing. Please tag buyers that if you want closed captioned and you don't recognize it listed in the description, not to alarm because it does have closed captioned in English. It has everything the regular edition has plus a few more extras. I was really impressed with the quality of the recount as well as the sound. Also, because it's a widescreen version as well when you decide to exhaust the closed captioning it doesn't obtain in the map of the record which is a nice advantage. I have you'll admire it. The music is fabulous. Ted Neeley was extraordinary and Carl Anderson is extremely talented. It's a rock opera not a musical and every song tells the account. Truly ingenious the diagram it was produced. The fact that it was shot on site in Israel gives it the authenticity you don't always scrutinize in films. I recommend buying the soundtrack as well. You can't beat the amazing impress either.

It took me almost two years (and a novel viewing of the current JCS movie) to fully relish the masterpiece that is Jesus Christ Superstar, the 1973 film. Told entirely through catchy, rock opera music, it tells the memoir of the last seven days in the life of Jesus Christ, but is hardly a literal interpretation and consists mostly of the drama between Judas and Jesus. The point of the film is to display the bible in a modern way- that everyone, even Jesus's closest disciples helped contribute to the death of Jesus through their inescapable humanism. Filmed in the Jerusalem desert, the production is fantastic. It's as if the best singers, film makers, dancers, musicians, and songwriters (Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice) came together for this one movie. Carl Anderson stars as Judas and is arguably the best performer to ever obtain the role. Ted Neeley is amazing too even though it takes a while to "earn" the strenghth in his underacting. Norman Jewison, who's experience and creativity as director shines through with every scene, takes the musical to another level, using a brilliantly conceptual theme that is introduced at the very beginning of the film. The locations are fine and fit perfectly within the context of the chronicle. The film has huge music, the ideas it tries to come by across are poignant, and it is distinguished, considerable better than the original film in its directing, acting, choreograpphy, and singing.

Although it unexcited follows the Die Hard formula - and how could it not? - of McClane versus formidable obstacles, Die Hard 3 wisely avoids the Christmas Crises scenarios from the first two films. Gone also (although the movie never really explains why) is Bonnie Bedelia's Holly, although she is mentioned in several scenes. Apparently McClane never adjusted to life in Los Angeles and returned to his job in the Modern York Police Department.

So when a bomb goes off at a Bonwit Teller store in Manhattan, it is providential for the Gigantic Apple that McClane is a lieutenant in Recent York's Finest, albeit a discouraged and beer-swilling lieutenant. Providential because we know that when arch-villain "Simon" (Jeremy Irons) demands that McClane participate in a potentially deadly version of the game "Simon Says," our Everyman hero will rise to the occasion and thwart Simon's deadly plan.

As in the first Die Hard film, McTiernan pairs McClane with an inspiring partner. Where in the 1988 flick Willis was helped by Reginald Veljohnson (better known as Carl from Family Matters), in Die Hard with a Vengeance his charismatic and reluctant partner is played by Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Star Wars Episodes I and II) . Their "unlikely buddies" routine is energetic and witty, and Jackson plays his Harlem store owner character with a mixture of biting wit, bewilderment, and even dignity.

I notion this movie was amusing, but I assume it would have been funnier with Smokey. If you haven't seen the first one, study it before you idea this one or you may derive it a bit confusing. If this movie had Smokey in the cast, I would have given it 5 stars. Overall, it is definetly a movie worth watching if you are up for a laugh.

Friday was a cult hit, by far the best ghetto flick so far (or at least joint with Menace II Society) and a greatly subtle parody. Then along came another...

Next Friday, lacking Smokey, was always going to be a film that by no means could finish the level of its predecessor. But, nonetheless it was a immense laugh and did nearly cleave me and others in the audience to tears and aching sides at points. Serene there were colourful characters and broad silly situations that made the first a riot, objective here to not quite a astronomical degree. Cube's movement from ghetto to 'burbs was certainly a gamble, but I reckon it paid off so that this sequel didn't turn into merely a clone of the first to cash in on the success. The 'Ese' element prooved very funny, as did the dog, but there was a slight too mighty of the "35, 45 minutes" gag that did start to come by annoying. Fans of the first will calm like this one and for them it is well worth buying.

It did have one thing above the first - Cube's sex interest was one of the finest things on shroud I've seen in a while, but maybe that's being a small bit too superficial.

This best thing about this Christmas DVD is that it makes me feel delighted and like a kid again. How can you not luxuriate in seeing Exiguous Richard continually falling while trying to ice skate? Annete Funicello with green teeth? Whoopie Goldberg begging for work? Dinah Shore giddily singing without realizing she is annoying everyone? Pee-Wee and a group of Marines in a dance number? The reply is you can't succor but luxuriate in every exiguous of it. This special impartial oozes fun and camp. But the actual improbable thing is that it's all about something distinct - selfnessness. And this correct is never beaten over your head or made overly sappy. It's simply piece of the whole.

The special features are tiny, only two, and they are both commentaries. The first one features Paul Reubens, co-writer John Paragon (who also plays Jambi) and Lynne Marie Stewart who plays Miss Yvonne, the most splendid lady in all of Playland. The second commentary features four of the puppeteers who certainly had a lot to do in the special. The insights and tidbits on both of these commentaries are a huge bonus.

The explain itself is hastily paced and gives you a chance to visit with some extinct friends. Pee Wee's humor may not be for all, but if you enjoyed the series, you will certainly savor this special where holiday traditions are examined and lessons of the spirit of giving are learned.

The supporting cast includes members who have gone on to bigger things including Laurence Fishburne as Cowboy Curtis and S. Epatha Merkerson as Reba The Mail Lady (who is now a regular on NBC's "Law and Order" minus the dreadlocks) . Stars, music, fun, a vast package.

The transfer is unusual from the masters with Dolby Digital sound and is close-captioned. Highly recommended if you want to accumulate the Christmas spirit.

With microscopic fanfare, MGM has quietly transferred a handful of titanic B films to DVD that they not too arbitrarily categorize as "Midnight Movies." The nice looking digital prints are in their current theatrical format and appear as if they were taken from unusual material. The discs arrive with no expansive extras but care has been lavished on the box art, often reflecting the lurid lobby cards and posters of their initial release. Even acknowledging the B category, these are for the most portion well-crafted and, well, adequately acted.

In "WAR GODS OF THE DEEP," the gradual and much-lamented Vincent Mark co-stars with 50s gorgeous boy Tab Hunter in an adaptation of an Edgar Allan Poe account that pits he-men against gill-men with sexy Susan Hart caught in the middle.

See, Mark is uberlord of a lost underwater city (apparently built by a extreme articulate papier mache developer), and he's got gillgoons that kidnap landubbers. The second half is a showdown between bold humans and slimy fishmen with an wrathful, about to blow volcano towering over everything. ...

This gets 3 stars 'cause Vincent Impress and Edgar Poe had a hand in it.

AIP's main contribution to the fear genre in the 60's was their series of "Poe adaptions." If Poe wrote down a grocery list it became a movie starring Vincent Note. And many of these were ravishing efforts. But most such movies (including some from other studios which also starred Ticket) stuck slavishly to this formula, even using it for movies based on the writings of other authors. By 1965 the formula had degenerated, as formulas are wont to do. Poe, Lovecraft and Verne adaptions all felt basically the same. And War Gods of the Deep is no different than any of them (Compare Die, Monster, Die; House of Usher; Master of the World; The Mysterious Island and this film and you'll observe what I mean.) It is nominally based on City Under The Sea, but is more in keeping with Captain Nemo than Edgar Allen.

Director Jacques Tourneur was a mountainous filmmaker who helmed some of the defining genre pieces of the 40's: Cat People, I Walked With a Zombie and Out of the Past. His career pain up with this and Comedy of Terrors. And while he is not to be blamed for their mediocrity, it is gloomy that they have almost none of the atmosphere of his earlier works. Noteworthy of that can be attributed to 60's tastes, but it makes me wish these last few films had been shot in contrasty shadowy and white.

The region of WG of the D is simplicity itself: The nightgown-clad hottie is kidnapped (the movie's best scene) ; they follow her saunter (with a few leaps in logic) and approach upon the underwater city; they meet Effect, learn of an active volcano; leer where this is going? ; they lag around some, fetch threatened, show a few secrets, and eventually hurry in a too-long, too-dull (but decently directed) slow-speed meander along the bottom of the sea. Things occupy up slightly at the very demolish with a shootout and the inevitable volcanic eruption, but it's far too itsy-bitsy, far too tedious. A rooster (yes, that's accurate) is on hand for some humorous relief; he is cute, I guess, but his doting master gave me the dry heaves.

The sets are surprisingly trustworthy for an AIP costumer; the effects are very helpful for the time, the creature costumes are only okay, but seldom seen anyway. Due in allotment to the limited role the Gill-Men play, there are almost no chills whatsoever. In fact, the only one more wasted than the Gill-Men was the hottie. (I will say, she is the one person in the cast that can originate a giant helmet with a fish on it gawk glorious.) And Vincent Notice coasted through this role; it was the kind of power-mad tragic figure he could play in his sleep. Smooth, a coasting Vincent Effect is better than most anyone else.

MGM is to be highly-commended for making this long-unavailable movie (and many like it) available at such a well-kept heed. The shroud art on these things is almost worth it by itself. And the print of this movie looks stout. It's honest not a mountainous movie.

One of the biggest treats of the 2007 television season was "Damages," a base and unbelievable proper thriller from FX. Headlined by Glenn Terminate, I expected to luxuriate in this show--but I wasn't prepared for the level of sophistication, complexity, and intelligence it offered up from its first twisty, and crooked, moments. Made for adults, this drama demands attention and may not be for the casual viewer. With its intricate plotting and structure, the memoir is told from different time periods interwoven throughout each episode. Essentially, snippets of the chronicle are presented in each time frame, so the audience is left to speculate about the stout truth in any given instance. However, as the season progresses, the pieces originate to connect in unexpected ways that can both surprise and frustrate. I'd compare the memoir crawl of "Damages" to that of a sparkling novel--telling you objective enough so that you are tantalized to stick around for the next chapter.

The position of "Damages" is a knotty web that is difficult to recount briefly. Ostensibly, the explain revolves around a naive young lawyer played by Rose Byrne. The opening scenes demonstrate a bedraggled and bloodied Byrne stumbling down the streets of Original York--apparently the victim (or perhaps the perpetrator) of an act of violence. What follows includes lying, blackmail, corruption, and even murder--no one in this epic remains an innocent.

While I actually judge the region is the exact star of "Damages" (I don't contemplate I've ever said that about a TV reveal before) --it certainly doesn't harm that the cast is uniformly top-notch. Don't be surprised if you view End front and center advance awards time. Her thinly veiled menace and cutting remarks perform for classic villainy, but Discontinuance pulls it off in a diagram that you can't attend but appreciate! Byrne and all the key supporting players are solid and believable. I particularly liked Zeljko Ivanek and Peter Facinelli, but the precise revelation to me was Ted Danson. Honestly, I've followed Danson since he was a bit player in "Body Heat" and I mediate this is by far his best role. Mixing equal parts charm and bile, this is a titanic actor in a beautifully written role.

Again, I don't recommend "Damages" to everyone--I only wish I could! If, however, you cherish sophisticated drama--give this a shot. The DVD format is the perfect contrivance to behold this reveal at your beget traipse and like all its subtleties, surprises, and delights. But, be reminded, if you sit down to contemplate this show--WATCH IT! Otherwise, you might not like how intricately attach together "Damages" really is. KGHarris, 12/07.
There aren't any eccentric characters that gain you laugh like Denny Crane on "Boston Honest" nor are there any cases neatly tied up at the conclusion of each episode with a bow on them. "Damages" follows a single case and the follow out from that case from its beginning until its bitter demolish. "Damages" begins with Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne from "28 Weeks Later" and "Sunshine") bloodied and battered walking the streets of Unique York until she is discovered by the police. From there the series takes a move attend in time six months earlier a case that Ellen worked on as a unusual attorney at Patricia Hewes (Glenn Discontinuance) & Associates. It's a civil case where Hewes is suing multi-billionaire Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson) for hollowing out his company and robbing 5000 employees of his company of their pension plans in the process. Having escaped the prosecution of the U.S. Attorney's Office, Frosbisher now must defend himself from claims that he benefited by selling his stocks before his company collapsing and getting away scot-free. Frobisher of course insists that he is innocent and was as noteworthy a victim losing the company he cared for as the employees. We look the entire case unfold before our eyes, the double dealings, double crosses and underhanded attempts by both the Hewes and Frobisher's attorney to regain the upper hand in this litigation.

"Damages" is compelling, animated and well written featuring a wide variety of characters with their bear agendas. No one truly is an angel here although the naïve Ellen comes worthy terminate as she finds herself dragged into Hewes' world and manipulated as considerable by her boss as she is by the opposition in the case. A personal connection between Ellen and the case is uncovered which also makes Ellen suspect that the only reason she got the job was so that she could be customary to get the upper hand in the case. In the process Ellen sees her ambitions and dreams pull further and further away from her advance impartial as she thinks she is climbing the corporate ladder of success. Hewes tells Ellen at one point, "trust no one" and the same could be applied to everyone keen in the case.

Academy Award nominee/Emmy winner Discontinuance, Emmy Award winner Danson, Bryne, Tate Donovan, Peter Riegert, Michael Nouri and a host of film/TV/Broadway veterans bring these characters to life with a vibrancy rare in series television. If the chronicle sounds like it was ripped from the headlines, the Enron, Worldcom and other scandals where corporate CEO's betrayed the public trust and manipulated the market inspired the series but it's the compelling characters and drama that will gain you stick around to the conclusion of this 13 episode FX series.

The opening had me scratching my head in puzzlement--it looked like crappy low-rez video. It's a façade like everything else here as it is simply a sequence showing us the raw reality that Ellen finds himself trapped in. As the expose jumps attend six months in time to the beginning of the case, we earn a beautifully rendered video image. There are a couple of problems with video noise that occur.

Audio sounds good with a 5.1 mix that uses the format quite well. The 5.1 format is nicely extinct given that this is primarily a dialogue driven explain with nice ambient effects captured in the surround channels.

I was surprised that we only glean two audio commentaries on this region as I had hoped for more but both are effective and insightful. Glenn End, writers/producers Todd Kessler & Glenn Kessler, Daniel Zelman and director Allen Coulter appear on the pilot episode discussing issues they ran into shooting on space in Unusual York during a horrible winter, issues they ran into with trying to bring the series in on budget but short shrift the quality of the exhibit. I would have loved to hear stop and her co-stars on a separate audio commentary track discuss the craft of acting, their come to the material and some of their thoughts during their performances but what we do procure is quite helpful.

The second audio commentary features actor Zeljko Ivanek front and center dominating the discussion with the Kesslers and Zelman joining in with technical tidbits from time-to-time. Ivanek has long been one of my celebrated character actors and he has largely been underused in many TV shows and movies so its nice to observe him regain a character as juicy as defense attorney Ray Fiske to sink his teeth into southern reveal and all.

"Willful Acts" is a half hour behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the series. "Trust No One" clocks in under fifteen minutes and focuses more on the characters in the series. We also score a variety of deleted scenes. The really wintry feature of this location is that the disc is enabled so that the player can remember which episodes you've watched and jump good attend to the one you had next in rotation if you decide the "play all" feature.

"Damages" is a terrific, compelling good drama. All 13 episodes of the series plus the extras are on three Blu-ray discs and you also catch an insert that gives you the title of each episode, a brief synopsis and credits for each one as well.

I'm going to let you in on a miniature secret...I despise reality television. Arrive to reflect of it, television programming in general has been on a quickly decline for awhile now. It has become (at least for me) increasingly difficult to pick up something to notice without becoming bored. Reality T.V. is laced with too grand ham, sitcoms are unbearably lame, and action shows are impartial insulting to my intelligence. With all this worthless debris cluttering the television waves it was a blessing to pick up Matt Roloff and his family.

Being a fan of the expose and not wanting to employ $21.95 on the outrageously priced individual episode DVDs I found myself playing the waiting game for a beefy season DVD to grace the local department store shelves. Today the wait was over...

Season One is a three disc DVD status, the only downside to this is the packaging. It is made entirely of recycled cardboard with the DVDs having to be "slipped" in and out of residence. A nice improvement would have been a plastic backing for the discs to sit in...this scheme the DVDs wouldn't have to rub against the cardboard everytime the discs are removed and returned to the case.

I was also surprised to contemplate that out of the 20 episodes included in this region the pilot episode, entitled "Tiny People, Gargantuan Dreams" was absent. This is particularly well-known because this was the hour long episode that introduced us to the Roloff family benefit in March of 2005. I don't understand why this episode is excluded from this situation considering the significance it carried.

Little People, Titanic World (Season One) gets a well-deserved 4 stars. Although the case was somewhat generic and the pilot epsiode missing I found the rest of the DVD area very well set aside together and the note very reasonable.

With three shrimp ones in the house its hard to accept anything on tv that isn't a cartoon. My husband and I are bent on this reality exhibit which is serene on TLC. Once you open watching it you want to peruse more. You can learn so powerful from the Roloff family. I have been waiting for them to advance out with these DVD's by season. I'm aroused to gawk they are putting out season one and hope that they continue release all of the seasons here on after. I conception on introducing this program to my children as they derive older (my oldest is 6) . You procure a better plan of what "tiny people" go through in our stout world. It's really well-kept watching all of the Roloff children grow up. You won't regret it pre-order your DVD today!
